#23: What is your favorite vintage of Delaforce Vintage Port

Post by Roy Hersh »

I know that Delaforce is much bigger in some markets than others. It has typically been well represented in the UK for example. There are some Delaforce vintages like 1963 and 1970 which are quite good. But I am more interested in your own experiences.

What is your favorite VP from this shipper?

Delaforce... I don't think there will be many that have had 10+ vintages of this house. Had '70, '77, and '94; all of which I thought were good. Will have to review notes to see what other vintages I have had, want to say something from the 30's as well...

Certainly, the '94 is worth buying all you can. '70 and '77 were both good as well; not outstanding.

In my experience, the '85 was fairly average considering the quality of the vintage although the '70 was a monster of a wine. I have yet to try the '63 which I have heard is a very solid example of that vintage. I recently purchased quite a bit of the '94, but I haven't had the chance to pop one open yet - so no reviews. Delaforce VP is not commonly seen in my neck of the woods and when I do run across some typically they are only singles, but I would like to try more of their VP.

I have only try 1970 and it was quite good, an interesting VP.

Without hesitation I'd say 2000. It's the only one I do know  Funny, because Germany is an important market for Delaforce. Probably 2000 was way too young but I liked it. Could not resist to buy some bottles at about 18 EUR.

Even if it was just average, 18 EUR for any vintage is a deal. Not to mention one from a distinguished brand like Delaforce.

In Chicago one can find quite a bit of the younger vintages at good prices $35-$40 USD. I have only tried the 1995,1997,2000 and 2003 vintages. My favorite is the 1997. Very good fruit, good length.
Not the 95 points that Suckling rated it but probably 93pts.

I have tasted Delaforce 1935, 1960, 1966, 1970 and 1985. My tasting notes reveal that if I were to be offered the chance to taste any of these again I would choose the 1935 8--)

I have not been overwhelmingly impressed by any of the above wines but my notes suggest they are consistently good, but not spectacular.

I don't remember having had any, except for the 1977. I liked it a lot, so it's clearly my favourite.
