Boal 1940

Post by kath g. »

I have inherited a 1940 bottle of Boal. The details are as follows:
Manuel De Sousa Herdeiros
Crop 1940 Maturity Grade In oak casks Bottled in 1978. Nos 1 to 20,769Carrafa No 10,149 The bottle is sealed and is in good condition. I know nothing about madeira and would like to know - do we drink it, save it, sell it or throw it down the sink?! I'd be grateful fot any helpful advice.

Definitely don't throw it down the sink! Madeira is practically indestructible, so no matter how long you've had it or how it's been stored it is probably still in fine form.

Someone else will have to let you know whether or not that's a particularly good bottle, but I've had Madeiras that were that "young" before and they're pretty good.

I am heading to see Sousa in less than a month from now, on the island. I have not had that bottling but would think it would be quite tasty by now. Obviously pouring it down the sink would be a waste of good juice. If you like Madeira, then by all means drink this on a special occasion.

If you would prefer to sell your bottle, I can offer you advice on how to participate on our marketplace, or sell the bottle privately or at auction. I would be happy to discuss this by phone or email and if you are interested, please email me: roy@fortheloveofport.com and put in the subject line: Need Madeira info

Thank you!
