Buying Madeira in Funchal - Suggestions?

Post by Moses Botbol »

Where are the best sources to buy Madeira in Funchal? Do any of them have their inventory online?

D'Oliveiras shop has the best selection of old wine. They even have their 1850 Verdelho at 600 euros. The duty free shop at Funchal airport has the 1968 boal for cheaper by a few euro however. Don't know if they have the prices on line.
I'd also visit Borges. They have some wonderful wines, none particularly old however. Their 15 year old malmsey is a steal.
Our recent visit to Barros Sousa was wonderful as well. Again, no old wines, but what they had was quite nice.
Barbieto is not selling his old wines anymore. The oldest in the shop are from the 1960's.
Justinos is not set up for visitors. Outside Funchal close to the airport but they had some nice wines.
Haven't been to Henriques&Henriques, but they are outside Funchal also, but the opposite direction from Justinos.

I do know ... they do not sell wines out of the country, nor online. The Rare Wine Co. has the best prices in the USA on 90% of the time and their customer service is prompt and beyond reproach.

Yes the airport and shops in Funchal have good prices, but it is a long way to go to buy your bottles. it is much more realistic to find them here from a purveyor you trust, unless you already happen to be heading over to the island. It would be hardly worth a trip with the sole intent of saving money! :snooty:
