Nuances, Port cellaring and kids

Post by Roy Hersh »

We have had a thread about the dynamics surrounding laying down Port for your children. However, that was more about people deciding whether or not they would be cellaring Port for their kids to inherit.

Now we take this to the next step and ask for some specifics of what you will put into their future drinking pleasure.

This should be most interestingl :winepour:

I have two young sons (2 and 4) from 2007 and 2005.

A large part of my (future) VP collectione therefore consists of bottles of these both vintages, which I am building together with my father.

My 2007 VP orders (so far, combined with the ones that my father ordered) are:

Dow's (case of 6)
Fonseca (case of 6)
Graham's (2 cases of 6)
Kopke (2 cases of 6)
Quarles Harris (case of 6)
Smith Woodhouse (case of 6)
Taylor's (case of 6)
Warre (case of 6)

From the 2005 Vintages, my dad and I have the following VP's:

Croft Q. de Roeda (case of 6)
Dow's Q. Senhora de Ribeira (case of 6)
Fonseca Q. do Panascal (case of 6)
Kopke (2 cases of 6)
Q. do Noval Silval (case of 6)
Q. de Roriz (case of 6P)
Taylor's Q. Terra Feita (2 cases of 6)
Taylor's Q. de Vargellas (3 cases of 6)

These cases make up quite a large percentage of my total VP collection (not to say almost my total collection), but I think fo a very good reason. I am hoping to enjoy a good part lot of these ports when they've matured (as long as I'm still around of course) preferably together with my boys on nice occasions (they will not be hard to find I imagine :D :winepour: ). And of coursed I am planning hoping to leave some wonderful bottles (or maybe a even a couple of full cases) to them both to enjoy during the rest of this century!

My son was born in 1993 so will have to make do with the one case of Quinta das Licieras 1993 that I have managed to secure for him as no other producer released a VP from that vintage. However, around 40% of my cellar consists of wines from the 1996 and 1997 vintage so he will no doubt inherit some or all of them to enjoy.

Gerwin,

I believe there are three 2005's which are not only missing from your collection for your son, but they're of excellent quality:

a. Barros - don't laugh, it is a rock star
b. Croft's Quinta da Roeda
c. Quinta do Vesuvio

See if you can find these at decent prices because all of these are as good if not better than any other on your 2005 list. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Derek,

Between your son born in 1993 and my daughter born in 2002, life is rough. We both chose the worst years in these two decades to sire our kids. :wall:

Hi Roy,

Thanks for that insight! I'll definately look into it. The Croft Q. da Roeda I already have one case of byt he way.
I was also thinking of buying a case of Burmester 2005 VP (it came out on top (together wicht Vesuvio by the way) of a 2005 VP tasting by the tasting panel of Revisto de Vinhas -18 out of 20 points- from January 2008 at which about 40 VP 2005 were tasted) and is still available over here at quite attractive prices. What is your opinon on the Burmester 2005?

Thanks in advance!
