Los Angeles Port Tasting with Dominic Symington, his 2007 VP's and older Ports

Post by Andy Velebil »

Ok folks, it's rare that members of the Port trade make it to Los Angeles for a Port tasting. So next Tuesday, October 27th, Dominic Symington will be pouring the 2007's Vintage Ports from Graham’s, Quinta do Vesuvio, Warre’s, Smith-Woodhouse & Dow’s. As well as an older vintage from each house. How do you beat that?

Oh if you don't know who Dominic is, well now is a good time to find out. Since he is a member of the Symington family who makes Dow's, Graham's, Quinta do Vesuvio, Smith Woodhouse, Quinta do Roriz, Warre's, etc.

It's at The Wine Country in Signal Hill (next to Long Beach) and cost is $50.00

(no affiliation, but I will be there to again taste the Symington's very nice line up of 2007 Ports...do say hi if you make it. I'll be the nerdy one with a tasting notebook LOL)

If Mark J. is caught wearing an FTLOP, someone please take a picture for me so we can post it on PORTraits! [beg.gif]

Had a great time tonight. Some cool old stuff like a 1960 Warre's, 1963 Warre's (although I pointed out one bottle was corked ) , 1970 & 1977 Graham's, 1980 Smith Woodhouse, 1985 Dow's, and some other great young and old Ports were poured. I'll post more on it and TN's later this week when I get time, but it was a really fun evening. I hope more people get to do these tastings with Dominic this week in other parts of the country.

I did get to speak with a few people who hopefully will drop by and say hi. It ended up being a sit down tasting at the last minute, which IMO isn't the best for this type of tasting with so many people. It really limited the interaction between the guests themselves and Dominic. But there was some really old Ports opened and major kudos to The Wine Country store owner for pulling out all the stops and ordering such old bottles for the tasting.

How many overall attendees?

Sit down ... wow, that is weird!

I would estimate about 50-60 people. So a good turnout for a Port tasting!

Yeah the sit down thing sucked, but it was still a good time and Dominic Symington did a great job entertaining a large group for over 2 hours by himself (although he threatened to haul me up there to help....I quickly exited stage left  ).
