1985 Delaforce Vintage Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

D + 6: Color is red-brown--not bricking at the edge, but uniformly rusty. Aroma has some dried fruit, but mostly there is alcohol with some VA as well. In the mouth there is a little fruit, but the alcohol still dominates. The alcohol carries through the finish and some acid shows up as well.

D + 30: I left this out in the decanter overnight hoping for some improvement. But it was pretty much the same as the night before. There might have been a little more dried fruit.

Caveat and Overall Impression: This bottle suffered from SOS-Signs of Seepage. I could feel a little stickiness on the neck and the seal showed it as well. I pulled the cork, which crumbled a little at the bottom, revealing complete soaking. (The attached picture shows the top of the cork.) That was part of my motivation in opening this--before it got worse. This bottle tasted like a tawny, and not even a good 10 year old at that, just a regular tawny. I'm probably going to cook with the rest of it this evening.

For the most part I've been very happy with my cheap bargain bottles. This was the exception. I was looking for the recommended 1994 Delaforce and found some, and the merchant also had this 1985 for a mere $25. In this case I would have been better off with an LBV or 10 year old tawny, but luckily the gamble wasn't big.
