Is all 1985 Burmester "Extra Selected?"

Post by Eric Menchen »

At the :ftlop: Gala last January my wife and I both really enjoyed the 1985 Burmester Vintage Port. Since then, I've purchased two bottles which were labeled as "EXTRA SELECTED." Now I don't know if the Gala bottle was so labeled as I didn't study it, and checking my my photos, I don't see it pictured. Now winebid.com has a number of bottles up for auction. Some are listed as "Extra Selected" with a starting bid of $90. Others are listed as just as "1985 Burmester Vintage Port" with a starting bid of $40. (Side note: Please don't outbid foomench!) However, the photo for this listing shows a label with "Extra Selected" on it as well. Is there a 1985 Burmester VP that isn't "Extra Selected?" Is this a case of two different products, like Portal and Portal+, or just a single product given different names?
