Port shops in SFO and LA

Post by Steve Culhane »

Hi all,

Have a short trip to Cali over XMas, arriving in LA and leaving from SFO. What are the best places to buy VP in both cities these days?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

I love Wine Exchange in Orange. A bit of a drive from LAX about 40 minutes without traffic, but they've got a good selection of Ports and a small selection of good Douro wines and some of the best prices around. Hi-Times in Costa Mesa is also very good, but there on-line inventory list is usually far out of date. THey are just down the freeway from Wine Exchange.

I don't buy much from retailers in the LA area proper as prices tend to be quite high. But 20-20 wines, The Wine House, are two that usually have good selections.

My schedule is pretty packed this month, but let me know if you want to try and meet up for a few glasses of Port while your here in L.A., it would be nice to meet you.

Have a safe trip

Thanks Andy,

I will definitely check the Wine Exchange on my way to SD, they have a very interesting inventory. I only have one night in LA, Friday the 18th, will probably leave towards SD Saturday AM. We plan to be staying somewhere between LAX and Burbank, exact place TBD. If you're available, it would be great to meet you. Since I'm flying in the AM, I'll probably be dead by around 9pm and therefore a very cheap date

It's not clear from their website whether they have a retail shop, but these folks have delivered some nice ports to me via the internet.
If you will be in SF you might want to give them a call:

Golden West is internet sales only. I personally trust them.

I'd say that you might want to try Wally's in West Los Angeles or possibly the Wine House both of which are about 15 minutes north of LAX. A few other options might include 20/20 Wine Merchants which is also in West Los Angeles, a few blocks north of The Wine House (a bit on the expensive side, but they do have quite a selection) and Woodland Hills Wine (located in the San Fernando Valley).

As an FYI - I got Niepoort 2003 for 40$ from the Wine Exchange (thanks Andy :D ). They had a couple of cases left (on Dec 19th)...
