Coincidentally and sadly, after a decade of wine journalism, the husband and wife team (DOROTHY J. GAITER AND JOHN BRECHER) who've penned their nearly 600 columns are done reporting for the WSJ with this very last article. They give a year end report with their most delicious wine finds. There was one Portuguese wine amongst them ... and it just so happened to be a Vintage Port.

Sweet! The wine pick that is. I'm not a big Graham's fan, but one of my local b&m's had the 2003 on sale for $40 a while back and I picked up a bunch.

A nice closing column, and sad to see it end.

Sorry for a bit of thread drift, but may I ask how come? We all have our likes and dislikes, I was just curious as to what yours was?

Now there's a difficult question. The easy answer would be that it is too sweet, but I don't think that works because I like plenty of very sweet dessert wines. I've think I've had eight different vintages of Graham's, and the 1985 and 1983 multiple times and while they were all nice, none has really knocked my socks off. I wouldn't turn any down if you offered it, and I still picked up some of the 2003 to try; but given a choice between Graham's and most other brands, I'll chose the others. Checking my notes, in one I wrote, "Too simple." In another I note that the Graham's was my least favorite of a flight. The 1963 was pretty good, but I felt all in that flight were less exciting than I had hoped. I did find the 1983 to be pretty tasty, but still preferred Smith Woodhouse from that year.
