What is your favorite vintage of Chateau d'Yquem?

Post by Roy Hersh »

I know it is sacrilege to talk about another one of the world's great dessert wines, as this one obviously comes from the Bordeaux region of France. Have you had much in the way of Chateau d'Yquem? If not or if so, what is the most memorable experience you had with Yquem and what is your favorite vintage of it, overall?

Can't say I've had a lot of it, but have had several and own some which I haven't tasted yet.
But, among those I've had, I'd go with the 1975. The epitome of power with grace. I think Yquem really shows it's best with age. Young, it's a fine Sauterne; but it gets spectacular with age.

I had quite a few in the past years,

I was lucky to taste the 67 but unfortunately it was not a top bottle so it ended up being an OK Yquem. Among the 70,86,90,96,97,98,99,2001 that were all very very good, I'd go today with the 97. The texture is perfect so are the flavours. 2001 is tasting too much oak today but is looking to be one hell of a bottle! I was amazed how the 70 and 86 were tasting so young while other top Sauternes are starting to fade when they hit the 20 year old bar.

I have been fortunate and tried nearly 2 dozen vintages over the years. I love the 1971/1975/1976 troika. If I had to pick just one it would either be the 1971 or 1983 which is my favorite vintage for Sauternes overall.

Can't say I've ever had any really old ones, but I love the 1997 and 2001

Oldest I have had of recent memory is 1970. My cousin has several but the storage is not ideal. The bottles are darker then what I would expect. Even at that, the d'Yquem's are still a joy. I was watching Julia Child show from 1970 and she was suggesting d'Yquem for a dessert wine. Was it as expensive back then? She's had several good wines on her show back then.

At a birthday party last spring we had a magnum d'Yquem. Excellent bottle & experience, but it could've decanted for much longer.

1983

I wish that I had bought some 10-12 years ago when the price was more reasonable. All I have is the 1999, which seems to be getting more well-regarded.
