Normally I like to drink Port with closer friends or relatives, only when I want to take some small sips and then notes... in order also to give my own perspective to customers about the Ports that we have here, I taste it alone

While I never open a bottle alone, I have been known to finish one by myself the next day(s) after it has been opened and unfinished with others. I find it to be morally wrong to throw out Port (and sushi, but that is a different story.)

Virtually all of my Port drinking is done with my wife (who loves even young vintage Port, despite her hatred of tannin), or sometimes with a small group of Port loving friends.

I was wondering why Steve was not invited to join us for the offline. It would have been great to meet him in LA.

The good news is that two weeks later, we finally got to meet in SF at an amazing Madeira tasting!

So far I drink more Port alone than with others, but I'm trying to indoctrinate others. My wife often has a wee bit of Port with me, and then stops. For example, two nights ago she had about 2 ounces -- maybe less -- of Noval 2001 LBV and wasn't enthousiastic about it. I don't know why not. I shared a bottle with some friends in Tulsa recently (Graham 2003 Filtered LBV), and this was very pleasant -- a good vehicle for leavening and encouraging our conversation. I plan to introduce two of my sisters to Port who will visit my home in mid-April. I prefer to share and drink my Port with others, but I can manage to get it down OK by myself if need be.

More so with friends. I started a Port Club which in 18 months time grew to our capacity of 10 good friends where it has been for awhile (10 max. leaves room for the occasional guest <Andy V.--come on down!?!?!> and gives us all a decent pour for each bottle sampled). We certainly always have a great time--it can get quite boistrous. SO, while I do not have a cellar full of port , I am rich in friends to share with and (according to Eric Menchen -with whom I happen to agree) near a lot of excellent wine stores.

That being said, I often start a bottle with a friend or family member and then finish it myself during the week. The sharing of a bottle and the comeraderie is a big component to me as I enjoy it more with others; my tasting notes improve too with the ensuing conversation about the port, too.
