1977 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

Post by Kris Henderson »

1977 Smith Woodhouse Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Dark red/purple with lots of color extraction. This had a funky nose that was smoky and had hints of burnt rubber. Still lots of tannin left in this and decent body on the palate. Medium length finish. (87 pts.)

I've had this twice last year, once at the :ftlop: Port Gala and once out of magnums at the 2007 VP release in San Francisco last April. Both times the wine showed perfectly and was easily on tap as one of the top of the vintage. I do hope yours shows as well as those two bottles did. I can only guess that maybe Kris' was heat damaged along the way and that's why he got funky burnt rubber from.

I like this VP quite a bit and agree with Andy's speculation about Kris' bottle. It is not only one of the very darkest 1977s today, but it is showing very well. My only quibble with the SW77 is that although very concentrated and compact, it lacks a bit of complexity and is straightforward and primary. A very fine VP, showing its youthfulness, nonetheless.

I have tried it several times. I think I have posted on FTLOP on it. I think I scored it 90 , if feeble memory serves. I remember it as a good value as it seems I paid about $30 per bottle, several years ago.

Finally posting my notes from 2-19-12:

Smith-Woodhouse 1977

Decant: 8 hours

Cork was starting to look marginal, but came out in one piece. It was decidedly soft and about 90% soaked through. Tons of sediment. This wine was still very burly after 8 hours of decant, but had a lot of fruit and bramble notes to it, as well as very good balance.

Decant: 16 Hours

Still awfully burly, but starting to loosen up some, giving the same profile of fruit and bramble, but with a smoother structure

Decant: 30 Hours

Finally singing, this wine has plenty of fruit and perfume, but retains that brambly/underbrush component to keep things from simply being fruity. Delicious stuff and at a great place, after the ~day decant.
