OPEN THAT BOTTLE NIGHT

Post by Roy Hersh »

Of course we can twist this to: OPEN THAT BOTTLE OF PORT night.
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Very interesting, the way that they promote wine, with respect and at the same time developing the passion for it.

I only change the 2nd item: instead of a bottle of wine or Champagne... a bottle of Port !

I read their column in the Wall Street Journal for years. I nearly dropped my subscription when Gaither and Brecher retired the column. I still may drop it at some point.

On the other hand, port lovers (or serious wine-of-any-kind lovers) celebrate OTBN almost any time. The only "special" bottles I have are waiting on time to mature, not waiting for a night that's special enough to open them.

OTBN is for people who attach too much significance to "things", and too little significance to each and every day. Sometimes you just have to force them to stop and smell the rosés.

Well put Peter. I may just have to open something nice for tonight.

Yes, Peter, I think you have just made many of us feel so guilty that we will have to pop a special one this evening to save our souls  [cheers.gif]

This is my favorite quote on the subject of holidays/special days.

from New Celebrations: The Adventures of Anthony Villiers (Alexei Panshin)
"Holidays are no pleasure for anyone but children, and they are a pleasure for children only because they seem new. Holidays are no pleasure to those who schedule them. Holidays are for people who need to be formally reminded to have a good time and believe it is safer to warm up an old successful party than to chance the untried. And they sigh in relief when the ordeal is done."

So what did you open. I decided to finish off what was left of a generous sized bottle of 2006 Vesuvio. Yum.

My soul was doomed long ago, so I didn't bother wasting a good bottle trying to save it

I had a 2003 Goretti L' Arringatore, and alternating glasses of Ferreira 10 and 20 yr. The 10 was open for 4 days and was on the downhill side. Mike said it was at its best at 2 days. The 20 has been open a week and is still very good and still much like it was when freshly opened. OTBsoN (Open That Bottle (some other) Night.)

As long as you drink it, that's not really possible now is it? :Naughty:

1977 Warre's half bottle. This was one of my wife's favorites of the 1977s at the first :ftlop: Gala, and this bottle showed that wasn't just a fluke. It was very enjoyable with steak, a cheese course, and dessert.

I say drink it! If you live near Boston, give me a call before serving. [cheers.gif]

As long as it is not a too drunken decision, why not? The worst thing that happens on the drunken decision is that the port will be pop and pour. Paitenence is like a 1 year old when while waiting for port to open up after a few bottle are now empty. [kez_11.gif]
