"Chacun a son gout," but rather "each one as to his gout."

I delightful description and some charming drawings of pre-twentieth century madeira appear as a number of chapters in Henry Vizetelly's book Facts About Port and Madeirapublished in London in 1880. My copy is a reprint printed by Bacchus Press in Baltimore.

Scott & Others,

If you are serious about collecting books about any wine it is worth investing in a copy of "Wine into Words" by James M Gabler. Not only is this a beautiful book in its own right but it is a bibliography of books about wine with over 3,200 books listed with short descriptions of their contents and biographies of some of the more prominent authors.

An alternative, although now very out of date, is Andre L Simon's Bibliotheca Vinaria, which was presumably the inspiration for Gabler's book.

Derek, thanks for the suggestion.

For anyone interested in Wine into Words please note that the 2nd Edition is much improved as it has a comprehensive subject index which the 1st Edition lacks.

In other wine book news, I had the good fortune to meet Mannie Berk of Rare Wine Company fame. I asked him about his forthcoming book on Madeira. According to him, the book will actually be a reissue of Noel Cossart's Madeira, The Island Vineyard with notes, annotations and updates. This is something to look forward to as this book has long been out-of-print and difficult to find.
