Sadly, I still haven't tried any of the VP's yet. Would it be a crime to open a 2007? I don't wanna open the 2005 magnum yet.

Yes, Eric Ifune hit it on the head with that one. I've enjoyed a number of Neipoort colheitas and while I own six different vintages, the only VP I've tasted is the 1960. But that one was so wonderful it deserves to be mentioned. I kept going back and forth between that and the 1935 Sandeman, both wonderful in different ways. The floral and citrus aromas of the 1960 Niepoort kept eluding me and drawing me back in.

Unless you have a large stash, I vote for holding on to both of those for a while.Espen S. wrote:Sadly, I still haven't tried any of the VP's yet. Would it be a crime to open a 2007? I don't wanna open the 2005 magnum yet.

Ack! How could I forget that one?Eric Ifune wrote:Don't forget the 1960 we had at the first FTLOP gala.
Ok I changed my mind. I liked that bottle of 1960 better than either the '97 or the '00, though that's at least partly because the '97 and '00 are still too young for me. If I'm still around in 40 years to try the 1997 and 2000 again I reserve the right to change my mind again.

I remember it vividly now... it offered up new flavors every time you took a sip and continued to evolve all night long.

Like Espen, I too have not had a Niepoort VP (I've got a 2005 LBV, however and cannot believe its lasted as long as it has). Notably, I saw some 2000 VP in a wine store that is very well kept...it has plagued me since I saw it as I really wanted it but I just cannot pull the trigger just yet. ![Pointless [dash1.gif]](./images/smilies/dash1.gif)
Looking around this topic it seems to me we have a supply problem--why isn't there more Niepoort available? I've only seen it in stores twice--and that includes everything--not just VPs. Should we be asking Dirk this?

I have had four, maybe five vintages of Niepoort and found 1970 to be my favorite. Very robust and powerful to this and perhaps the best 1970 of the vintage.

Re: #4: What is your favorite vintage of Niepoort's VP?
Espen,
Do not, repeat ... DO NOT, open that 2007 Niepoort VP. Put it somewhere in your cellar and FORGET ABOUT IT. This is one of the best Niepoort's during the Dirk years. I love the 2000 and 2003 too, this is a pretty serious one and if you want to drink it young, wait two more years. Otherise, I strongly advise waiting 20+ for this to really come into its own. However, it had enough structure when young that it will reach 50 years of age, with little to no problem, similar to what Rolf Niepoort (Dirk's Dad) did with the 1960.
John M.,
I gotta tell you that the 2000 Niepoort VP is not only a great VP, for my palate, it may just be the best of all of them. Some may prefer the Fonseca, but I've not had anything else (excluding the superstar 2000 Nacional) that is as great in '00. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Re: #4: What is your favorite vintage of Niepoort's VP?
Espen,
Save your magnum 05 and the 07.
Get your hands on a half bottle or 0,75 of the 05 VP, and drink it.
I've had 6-7 bottles of the 05 and this is one of my fav ports.
I really enjoy young ports, and this wine is my runner up in my young port competition.
The Quinta do Vale maeo 07 wins, Niepoort 05 was close.
Had the Niepoort 07 in january which was a disapointment. I'll leave my bottles of the 07 in the cellar for a while.
go open a bottle 05...

I think that niepoort has made some stunning vintage ports.
my favoutite is the v 1945 followed by the 27 and 55 than the 1970 and 77.
the best port I have made is in my opinon the 2005.

Re: #4: What is your favorite vintage of Niepoort's VP?
Just what I thought.
I just had a thought about trying a young one, and the 2007 is still available here. But if you strongly advise me not to do it, I believe you. Sadly, the 2005's are gone, I only found a magnum.
But hey, I'll probably drink my last 2007 when I'm older than anyone on this forum.![Toast [cheers.gif]](./images/smilies/cheers.gif)

I love the 2000 also, it's one of the few post-1994 VP's I've laid down. It's not always easy to find, but I did notice some at Raeder's recently, $90 each.Roy Hersh wrote: I gotta tell you that the 2000 Niepoort VP is not only a great VP, for my palate, it may just be the best of all of them. Tom,
Do you only buy Ports locally from brick and mortar wine shops, or do you also buy from retailers in other parts of the USA and have them shipped.

Re: #4: What is your favorite vintage of Niepoort's VP?
Melanie asked me today which was my favorite Niepoort Ports. I have not looked back into the thread but my answer:
My favorite VPs of Niepoort are 1927, 1945, 1970, 2000, 2003, 2007.
My favorite Colheita by Niepoort is 1912, followed by 1863, 1935, 1931, 1952, 1957 and 1937 ... in that order.

Yes, old Port is extremely rare around here, even Port in general. But I think it's way better than it was, so hopefully we're going in the right direction.oscarquevedo wrote:Hi Thomas, is it difficult for you and Espen to find old Port Wine in Norway?Thomas Tideman Holst wrote:cheer up Espen

The only old ones are very pricy trophies, like 64, 67 and 70 Nacional, and a couple of Dow's 70 and 77 mags and half bottles of 1950's Taylor. I know there was some 1963 Graham around too.
In my local store there's some of the 1961 Krohn Colheita.. I think I'll try to get one. I've heard it should be very good.
Thomas: Thanks! I managed to get a bottle.

Re: #4: What is your favorite vintage of Niepoort's VP?
I know the thread is 5 years old....But I didnt know You guys back then...
As a total Tawny-freek, I have not had that many VPs, but my top three Niepoorts are:
1955 (do not recall, if Roy mentioned this one at all? Maby hi forgot about it....
1960 and
1977
Had a few 2005, but are saving the rest until 2035.....
Looking out for the VP 1970, could be fun to pair it with the Colheita from the same year.
