decant advice: 1970 Taylor VP?

I plan on drinking it tomorrow night, it has been standing up for a couple of weeks. Any thoughts would be appreciated; also if you have any favored pairings.

Great choice, Paul!

If I'm remembering what he told us correctly, Kris H. splash decanted (Port filtered into a decanter, bottle rinsed carefully, Port poured back into the bottle) this bottle before he went to work which probably would have been about 10 hours before the tasting. My notes indicate that it seemed to need a little more decant time, but that doesn't necessarily mean more hours. Leaving it in a decanter for that amount of time (instead of spash decanting) would also work.

8-10 hours actually in a decanter should do very nicely. If you need to splash decant, I'd go longer - perhaps 12-16 hours. Kris's bottle really opened up and was glorious a couple of hours into our tasting.

If you have the time, it's also quite fun to experience those last few hours as it evolves. Decant it around noon if you plan to drink at 6:00 pm, then continue tasting throughout the evening. Some time between 8:00 and 10:00 it will start to change dramatically and really become stunning.

I love the 1970 Taylor... it's one of my all-around favorite Vintage Ports.

Seriously, I wouldn't pair it with anything. A Port that good deserves to be savored on its own.

tragic. I decanted the btl in the afternoon and poured a tiny glass for myself to check in. It was rather light in color, but amazing nose of wild strawberry and spice. It had a bit of heat which I hoped would dissipate with time, unfortunately I didn't find out. A guest knocked the decanter to the floor sending it to it's death into a million pieces and sticky port all over the floor. Nothing like taming an evening when you have to stop and clean up a million pieces of glass. I have an infant crawling so if I didn't do it then I was afraid she could get cut.

GD tragic. I was sooooo looking forward to the btl. I think I have another so it isn't the end of the world. I also opened up a 70 yquem, which was good-but not great. It lacked the acid to hold up over time; I recently had 70 Sudiraut (sp?) and it was far better and I'm sure it is a fraction of the mkt price.

Just noticed you list Detroit as location. That could cover a lot of places both Detroit proper and the whole metro area. If you happen to be westerly, you've got a FTLOP neighbor just east of Ann Arbor.

I've still got one of those porto rocha btls with your name on it. If you make it out this way at Christmas time that would be great. I know we will be in town as we have another baby due in August so I doubt we will travel.

I have visited this board more than I have posted, I will try to post more often as I have come to love madeira over the past 5yrs or so.

Hopefully the decanter wasn't an expensive one... those, at least, are easily replaced!

We will be in MI this December for sure. Not positive how many more Christmas' are left there ... but here's hoping for several!

Do you get together with the gang from Mo'Cool ever? I hope to see them all again this year. In addition, with less pressure than last year, I certainly hope to be joining the Gang of Port for another rendition of Paesano's this year. That is Peter Meek's group. Who knows, there may even be an errant bottle of Madeira to show up.

Maybe a 1970 Taylor from my cellar instead.
