The intensity at an even higher level in some ways. Sad to watch, being there ... unimaginable. [shok.gif]

At least through the episodes we've seen, although one side might be ahead in the death tallies ... it is hard to say that either side is "winning."

This series seems historically correct, although I am not sure that some other very important battles during this theater of war going to be included too. I do not know enough about this chapter in history. I wonder why schools in the USA spend so much time on the European/Nazi part of history and simultaneously, besides brief glimpses at Iwo Jima and Pearl Harbor, all but ignore the Pacific battlegrounds?

I haven't seen the series but I've heard the series is about the personal experiences of the average Marine. Their world was the little patch of earth they were one and the other battles were somewhere else.
As far as teaching history, the US has long been Eurocentric. Look at where all the tourists from the US went, up until the past 20 years or so. Only lately has the Pacific and the Central/South America even been on the historical radar; despite their influence on the west coast and the southwest.

I am not reading anything above this post as I don't want to spoil the ending. I am sad that I was not home for the finale but thanks to Dorene taping it, will get to see it my first night back ... ok, so maybe it will have to wait until the 2nd night back.

I really liked the 10th and final episode, which showed a moment when the war ended with the Japanese surrender. The aftermath, with the three main character's follow up stories was a great way to conclude. Wish it went on just a little further but like any great TV series, you never want to see them end.
