Tawny vs. Colheita

Post by mekons »

Well todays our anniversary; two full years of conjugal bliss. I just returned from the nearby BevMo and boy, do I have questions ! I was pleased to see them stocking more Vintage bottles such as Croft 63, Cockburns 83, etc. I had a hard time choosing between the 66 Krohn Colheita, the 40 year Presidential Tawny and the 30 year Grahams Tawny. Any help is appreciated.

I would suggest the '83 Cockburn's which when the bottle is spot on, is a really enjoyable Port. I also like the Krohn Colheitas although they can be inconsistent. The '65 is fair at best while the '66 is really nice. The Graham's 30 year old Tawny is delicious but pricey imo, but if the price is right ... it rocks. The 40 year old Presidential I have only had as the Dalva (same producer/different label) and it is great!

I am no help, I like them all.

I'm not much help either. I rarely drink tawny - as I was put off early in my tasting life by a bad experience - and hardly ever drink colheita, but only because of personal preference.

I've never drunk the Croft '63 so the only thing that I can comment on is the Cockburn '83. I have drunk this - and the bottle was corked :(

So my only advice is to buy one bottle of each wine (not necessarily at the same time) and try each of them to see which you prefer :D
