Federal law prohibits....an old Kopke.

Post by Niklas J »

Once in a while my supplier in Lisboa finds some oddities I simply can't reject! The Kopke Vinho Velho was one of those and I simply has to show you the bottle!
If it were ment to be shipped to the US (on the shoulder it is printed 'Federal law prohibits sale or reuse of this bottle') I will probably never find out, or if the producer simply took the bottles available in the cellar when bottling for their own use. However, it was delicious with its huge nose filled with fresh walnuts, old wood, figs and licorice.

The taste is creamy in its texture, almost fat, and the concentration level is impressive. Some sweetness lost though. Figs, dates, sweet licorice, a bit of dust, old casks and nutmeg. Lovely acidity. The only but; a slight bitter taste at the end. On the other hand; it's still a joy to sip and with some roasted and salted sun flower seed's I won't complaint. A 91 p rating. [cheers.gif]

How old it is I can only guess. If it were ment for the American market then the bottles had to have the marking between 1932 and 1964 and most likely this one is somewhere here in age. Lots of sediment and colour stuck to the inside of the bottle. 1950's?

Best,

Niklas

Remember this in 25 years or so; 2012 is a great year for Madeira wine!
