Los Angeles / O.C. offline with Oscar Quevedo (Quevedo Ports) June 29th

Post by Andy Velebil »

Hi everyone,

As many of you know I have a love of all things Portuguese, especially Ports and Douro wines. Well, Port Producer Oscar Quevedo is making his first trip to the Los Angeles area Tuesday June 29th and he has graciously decided to provide all the Ports and his first Douro wine for a dinner. So what better excuse to make this an offline than that. After all this Forum loves to party with Producers [dance2.gif]

I'll be putting together a dinner menu with a restaurant in the area (exact details to come soon) and all people would be responsible for is the actual dinner cost, which I am keeping reasonable. No need to bring anything to this offline, Oscar wants people to try his very good Ports and wine, and like I mentioned he is providing all the drinks. There will be an assortment of his Ports and Douro wine and I guarantee no one will go home thirsty. :winebath:

A little background on Quevedo....They are a small independent company that for many many years provided grapes for some of the "Big" port companies. In 1991 they decided to go it alone and start making Ports under their family name. A few years ago I had never heard of Quevedo, that changed one fateful late night under a bridge in Oporto drinking a bottle of his Colheita Port with Roy Hersh and another friend of ours Stewart. It was a wonderful bottle and that set in motion a desire to find out more about this producer. Since then I've visited their Quinta, met with Oscar, and drank his Ports and Wine on several occasions in Portugal (and what I've brought back to the US with me). He now has a USA importer and is looking to expand into this tough market and he wants people to experience his wares. I can tell you this a producer to watch out for as they make some great things.

Oh, and Oscar was also the first Port Producer to be a blogger, something unheard of at the time in the Douro. http://quevedoportwine.com/

Arrgh! I'm running in a half marathon on the 26th and my parents are going to be here that weekend, so I don't think I can make it. :(

Looking like about $265 for me, but I have to coordinate everything with my parents' flight home as well. And that's what I'm not sure I can manage... but I'll keep working on it!

This sounds like a great event.

I am lucky enough to be able to count Oscar amongst the people I call friends and he is a seriously nice guy who makes very good Ports. You guys on the Tentative list need to make the jump and get yourself there

Glenn, don't you have a job interview at the LA HQ of a potential new employer on 29th June

A spare liver [cheers.gif] All kidding aside, everyone is really looking forward to this and I'm looking forward to showing you around the wilds of L.A. since it's your first visit to the "City of Angels"...well, more like the City of Weirdo's. Luckily I have a spare bullet proof vest for you [bye2.gif]

This was an awesome dinner. Andy and Oscar did a great job despite a few shipping problems that were out of their control.

I thought the Antipasta course was simply amazing... I'm going to have to try butter poaching some lobster myself now. :yumyum: I'd have probably switched the Port pairings for the Secondo and Dolce courses so that the 2007 Quevedo Vintage Port could face off with the bacon wrapped filet and the 1975 Quevedo Garrafeira Particular (Colheita) could have been enjoyed with the two desserts. But that's just me.

Thanks to Andy for organizing a great event, and Oscar for providing the wonderful array of wines and Ports!
