Seattle area tasting, 7/31/2010

Post by Glenn E. »

I've been talking to Roy about having another tasting, and he proposed the end of the month to coincide with the approximate 5-year anniversary of FTLOP. So that's what we're going to do!

The theme is a loose one - bring a nice bottle of VP or Colheita to share. Preferably something a little older, like 1994 or earlier. If you'd like to attend and don't have anything older than 1994, send me a PM and we can figure something out. There are plenty of bottles around that could be adopted.

We'll be renting the (air conditioned) Executive Boardroom at the Holiday Inn as a precaution just in case it gets hot up here again, and that will also provide a convenient hotel for anyone who'd like to fly (or drive ) in from other parts of the country. The room is just about the perfect size for a tasting - it will hold 12-14 people.

We're now full! Sorry if I couldn't get you in, but 14 is really the max if you want a decent pour for everyone out of each bottle.

Attendees:

1. Roy Hersh - WA
2. Glenn Elliott - WA
3. Stewart Todd - WA
4. David Spriggs - CA
5. Bill Schallert - WA
6. Eric Ifune - CA
7. Blair Curtis - BC, Canada
8. Bronwyn Turner - BC, Canada
9. Andrew Taper - WA
10. Markus D. - BC, Canada
11. Sean C. - AZ
12. Jay Nitikman - CA
13. Lisa Stevens - WA
14. Vic Wertz - WA

Glenn,

Thanks for putting this together. I really appreciate it. I also sent a link to a bunch of local Port enthusiasts, so I have a feeling this might turn into a bit more of a "serious" tasting than we initially discussed. In fact, I can almost guarantee that.

Works for me! After all, we can't let those Brits have all the good tastings, now can we?

Just for fun I looked at airfares, and they are more than twice what I paid to go to LA for the Oscar gathering, so I'll be sitting this one out. Sounds like fun. May all your bottles show well [cheers.gif]

Bummer! Sorry to hear that, Eric (Menchen). I was already planning to have you stay in my spare bedroom!

Glad to hear you can make it, Eric (Ifune). Looks like this is going to be a rockin' tasting!

The locals are going to have to speak up soon or we're going to fill up with people from out of town! [yahoo.gif]

Yeah, airfare is quite expensive, about 2 times what it normally is, with such short notice from L.A. as well. But my biggest issue is trying to get off work that weekend, as I'm scheduled to work that Saturday. I'm working on it and holding out a sliver of hope I can make it and will let everyone know as soon as I can.

Jeez, I'd love to attend but the last weekend July is tough one for me. I'm flying to Alaska that weekend for a week-long project I'm working on and I've already purchased the ticket....

I'll see what I can do.

Glenn, I would love to attend and meet some of you guys. Unfortunately, fares from Madison get pretty ridiculous on short notice. I will eagerly await the next gathering, though!

The short notice is my fault. This was very impromptu and Glenn is not to be blamed and I apologize to all for not being able to plan this out way further in advance.

No need to apoligize at all, although I'm jealous and amazed you can get a Port tasting put together on short notice -- it would take me 6 months to scrounge together a decent size group of Port lovers around here [dash1.gif]

Looking forward to reading the notes :yumyum:

Until recently, that's what it used to always take me to put one together, too!

We're slowly becoming a little more active around here, which is good. Port is good, but sharing it is even better!

Augh! I will be out of town for this. [dash1.gif] However, I will be in Vegas, having fun, so that is some consolation.

Hi Glenn,

I should be able to make this one - count me in. Same hotel I stayed at last time so should be easy to find :)
