1978 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Post by Tom Archer »

Another bargain... :P

For some bizarre reason, a few cases of this wine were shipped to a temperature controlled store in Japan and then years later shipped back to Christies in London to be sold.

Not surprisingly, the trade were less than enthused about buying port with Japanese import labels, so a shot-to-nothing bid on a ten bottle lot came up trumps.

The cost of shipping the wine to London probably cost more than I paid...

Anyway, I decanted a bottle yesterday afternoon, and after a quick sip left the decanter until this lunchtime.

Colour is a little pale, but otherwise typical of its age

Bit of an oddity, this one, in that it manages to combine the normally contradictory attributes of being both light and jammy.

It's Taylor parentage is not that obvious either, but it is a very smooth and drinkable beast!

Thanks for the tasting note , at last a note on a wine I have (only one bottle though) but have not tasted. In your opinion is this at the drink up stage or has it some life in it yet?

Whilst I don't think this wine has a huge amount of scope for improvement, I don't think it will be worse in ten years time.

It is well composed, so my best guess is that a graceful old age awaits.

- I shan't rush to drink through the remaining bottles :D
