The news worldwide today is full of remembering that John Lennon was killed in New York 30 years ago. I have a personal story I would like to share with you.
I was in New York when it happened. As a very young businessman (working in a Norwegian ocean shipping company) I was visiting the New York office. I had also agreed to spend one evening with a friend from the college. He had been in the NY-area for abt 6 months, and it was more partying than working and several of his friends were afraid he was moving in a very bad direction. My friend and I walked around in NY that evening and suddenly there were a lot of movements of people, police cars, ambulances etc. We did not understand what was going on, but decided to go in a different direction. When reading the papers the following morning, we understood that we had only been a couple of blocks away from where John Lennon had been killed.
The last part of the story was that I managed to get my friend on the same plane as me, back to Oslo. We arrived a Saturday morning. I went home to my wife Emmy, while he decided to make one more night on town, this time in Oslo. That evening he met a young lady who later became his wife, and they are still married. So when we meet from time-to-time, we always talk about John Lennon (the sad part), and that he was very happy making the decision to go home together with me as he met his wife that last single-party-night in Oslo (the good part).

Great story, Rune.
I am a native NY'er (like you couldn't tell from the accent) but was living in Florida at the time of John's murder while attending Univ. down there. I remember coming home from school and being shocked at the terrible news. It was a crazy time, with the Pope & Ronald Reagan also shot by would-be murderers ... all 3 incidents inside of six months. It was also the same time as the US Hostage Crisis w/ Iran. But several months later, lots of great grapes were picked and turned into many a beautiful vintage Port '80.

Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com
