What is the BEST 30 year old Tawny you've had?

Post by Roy Hersh »

Lots of choices and even my own list has changed with some new additions and Ports I had never tried before from the 30 year old Tawny category!

What are your favorites?

Perfect timing!

I just opened a Sandeman 30-yr old on Christmas Eve, so had already been thinking about this. The Sandeman is excellent, but doesn't make my list. It's too tart/has too much citrus and is too acidic for me.

So I'll have to stick with the S. Leonardo, which is fabulous, followed by the Ramos Pinto which I got to try for the first time at Quinta de Ervamoira this year.

I have a Quinta de Ste. Eufemia and I've heard that the Vista Alegre is superb, but I haven't tried either of them yet so can't officially add 'em to my list!

The best and only one I've ever had was a Ramos Pinto 30 y.o. I think that might have been the best drink I've ever had. One sip, and it was impossible to stop drinking. You know what happened next. :winebath:

As in the 10yo category I'll have to go with the 30yo Taylor's...

The Ramos-Pinto 30 year old is really something special and I wrote a note on that for the past newsletter, as it was enjoyed by my brother and I over 2 days, while on the deck at night in Cancun during Thanksgiving week. Really a beautiful 30 year old. Additionally, it went great w/ Cubans later on, too.

The S. Leonardo is probably still my favorite 30 year Tawny Port.

Oddly,
3o year old tawny is the type I've had the least,....crusted maybe the least actually but not many 30... I recall having a Kopke 30 when I turned 30 many years ago. I had more 30 year old Colheitas (so years from the 80s) then actual 30 Tawnies. Even 40 Tawnies are easier to find than 30 around here.

One more vote for Taylor. Sandeman would be my next vote.

Portugal. :( It's pretty much impossible to find in the US. Amazing stuff.

Although I think that S. Leonardo and Ramos-Pinto are both very good, my vote still goes to Niepoort. Amazing stuff.

+1, but I can't say I've tried that many--not the Niepoort nor the Ramos Pinto.

Given all the recent discussion on our favourite 20 yo tawnies, I thought it might be interesting to resurrect this thread.

I've only ever tasted about 5 different 30 yo tawnies so don't feel qualified to express an opinion.

I haven't had that many either. I have had the San Leonardo and it is excellent. Looking forward to trying some of the Krohn I got at the lodge. If even close to the San Leonardo, it'll be a great bargin!
