1982 Dow Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port

Post by Steven Kooij »

Dow 1982 Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. From 375, decanted some 4 hours before tasting it non-blind.

This bottle had thrown about 1 cm of deposit, and looked very light in the glass. Still ruby red, but with a slight bricking on the edge. Initially, nothing on the nose apart from a very slight whiff of VA. This blew off with some more time, revealing dried figs and leather.
Big bodied, but not glycerolic. Sweet for a Dow. Very smooth, plenty of dried fruits, tobacco and caramel. Slightly hollow on the midpalate. No tannins left.
Medium finish, rather dry with earthy flavours, if a bit hot.
Not the most interesting of VPs, but better than I had expected (especially from a 375): 87 points – drink up!

Sounds a bit rough!

Although writers like to vilify the '75's (somewhat unfairly IMO), '82 was a year that did much damage to those shippers that declared their blends in preference to the '83's.

Croft, Delaforce and Sandeman are still licking their wounds..

Tom, my experience with '82 is very limited, but this was WAY better than the Sandeman. The Roots' and I will be tasting 1982 Taylor's Terra Feita and Fonseca's Cruzeiro in a few weeks side-by-side: I'm curious to see how they will hold up...

I am still searching for an (affordable!) bottle of Niepoort 1982, apparently one of the better bottlings of the vintage. If anyone knows a source, please post of PM. TIA! (Sorry Stevie for drifting off topic...)

No problem Ronnie: just as long as you'll share the bottle! :)
