In other parts of the world that I've been to, like So. Africa and a bunch of countries in Europe and central America, I have yet to see styrofoam used in any real quantity for packing up wine in retail shops or during winery visits. They use cardboard. I had a new type of cardboard wine shipper sent to me last week when receiving some Fichet Meursault and was very impressed w/ the box. I posted elsewhere about it, as the Rare Wine Co. was the one to ship it, but they only use it during non-temperature-challenged times of the year and continue to use styro.
This just may be the answer to the mountains of styro that us wine geeks in the USA wind up with: http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/26556000/3 ... /cxeye.pdf
I thought I'd put this here as well as in another thread discussing this topic, for later reference.
