Looking For Dream Bottle of Old Port

Post by lukethedrifter1 »

I've always wanted to purchase a really old Port (e.g. pre-war, 50's etc). Don't know the field and need some suggestions. Budget $200 to $400

Many thanks in advance

Scott,

Thanks for the posting, which provides me with the opPORTunity to welcome you to the FOR THE LOVE OF PORT Forum. I look forward to more of your fine posts and hope that you find this a friendly and user friendly place to share and learn. If you have yet to sign up for the monthly newsletter, please go to the homepage and do so ... it is FREE of course.

In direct response to your question: Any of these 3 should serve your purposes and deliver the goods:

1955 Cockburn, Graham or Sandeman. All drink beautifully today and fit your price and age range.
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Well, you will probably get enough responses with advice for VP, so I'll give another suggestion.

If you want something really rare and special, try to find a Niepoort Garrafeira (e.g. 1948 or 1952). The only one I ever tried was the 1952, and it was a truly special experience. It cost me €200.

Scott,

Use winesearcher.com to look for retailers (on-line and off-line) who might be able to help you out. Vintages to look for would be Roy's suggestion of 1955. Other possibilities are 1958, 1952, 1950, 1948, 1947, 1945. Prior to that you would expect to be more than your budget. 1955 would be the most likely year to meet your requirements.

You might also be able to find older wines at auction at places like Sotheby's, Christie's or a local auction house (I don't know any in Louisiana).

Scott,

Roy Hersh's advice is spot on (as usual) and I have enjoyed both the 1955 Cockburn and Sandeman back in October 2005.
