[E]ven Niepoort had to admit the following evening that a bottle of 1976 bottled in 2007 was a better wine than the same vintage bottled in 1985 ...
That doesn't seem quite a fair comparison, as the 1985 bottling has only 9 years in cask. How would a 1976 bottled in 2007 compare to a 1954 bottled in 1985? That might not be fair either, but more to the point.

I think it was a fair call, they simply want to prove that Colheita does AGE and IMPROVE in bottle.

Apples and oranges. You can't realistically compare a 9-yr old Colheita to a 31-yr old Colheita. They're entirely different beasts, regardless of how many years in bottle either one of them has. Eric's comparison would have been much more appropriate despite being Port from different years.
