2000 Allesverloren South Africa vintage port

Post by Bjørn Tore Aastorp Ruud »

I always think is interesting to taste "portwines" from other countries than Portugal. Allesverloren which is the producer in this case, makes a lot of good wines from portugues grapes like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca, however in a different style than in Douro, they do it in style.

So, as their red wines have very good quality, I had some expectations for their "port" as well.

I was disepointed, and here is the TN:

Color: Dark red with brown, light brown and slightly orange rim. Medium depth.

Nose: Prunes, raisins, pecan and walnuts, wood, pencil, some barnyard, reduced beefstock, mature dark berries and dominante alcohol.

Palate: Medium bodied, the wine lacks a little concentration and structure, quite long finish of prunes and raisins, quite good acidity.

Foodmatch: Chocolate desserts. Cheese.

Cellaring: Drink now.

The wine is ok but the alcohol shows a little, its not integrated enough. The wine is a Vintage 2000 and the style is like a 7-10 year old tawny. So you can not compare it to a portuguese vintage port.

I think the producer is on to something here, but they should maybe concentrate in making tawnies?!

Bjorn,

I must disagree. I visited Danie while down in SA as I was invited to come for a vertical of his "vintage port" wines. He does not have a library stock so he had to source some of the earlier vintages from a local auction house in SA.

My favorite is the 1991 Allesverloren, but I found others quite nice too. They do not normally show like Tawnies, so that part of your 2000 tasting note was the only surprise. I find their wines fresh, fruit driven, decent structurally and lacking in aromatic excitement. However, compared to most non-Portuguese ports ... this is one of the top 10 producers I have found elsewhere. Just my two cents and of course, I respect your opinion.

Thanks for coming back to visit ... your insights are very much appreciated!

Bjorn

I posted a tasting note on the 1990 Allesverloren (you can find the TN here: http://fortheloveofport.com/forum/viewt ... esverloren).

My tasting note also shows that I found the style of the wine very similar to that of a tawny wine, not the fruit and power of a bottle aged vintage port.

But having said that, I did really enjoy the 1990 Allesverloren port.
