Two incredible old videos w/ Port and Portuguese wines

Post by Roy Hersh »

OK, so they're in Portuguese ... it does not matter. What you will see in the footage captured here is truly amazing. I don't know how old these really is, I'd say 40-70+ years old, maybe someone else will be able to tell us.

A must watch! Comments welcome. [cheers.gif]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-Xu7grH ... ture=share - you won't believe the woman at RCV putting on the hand-sewn straw sheaths on the bottles, ancient bottling lines, the picking etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6_kAYz6 ... re=related - how about the views of Porto, the one bridge, Gaia's waterfront etc?

Really fun to watch--kept thinking Lucy & Ethel were going to show us how to stomp grapes! [1974_eating_popcorn.gif]

I just learned this was filmed some time in the 1930's, so it is actually at least 70 years old!

The first one I thought was from the 1930s given the trucks that were driving around; but there are some clothes around 10:38 in that made me wonder if it could have been later.

Very cool! I had no idea RCV made that much wine, and even a sparkling wine. Can you imagine having to fill, cork, capsule, label, and pack in straw all those bottles by hand. The labor force back then had to have been massive by today's standards.

I had to laugh at the first video as the women are picking grapes and there is one that is eating a grape from each bunch she picks....quality control or just hungry?

pity you don't understand the Portuguese, it is hilarious. It is very Old Regime propaganda style: very pompous, simplistic and condescending.

Interesting nobody commented that the very old bottles of Port were all cellared standing up!

Well there was that old wood "riddling rack" (a la Champagne) where they were turning the bottles of sparkling wine when upside down. Lot and lots of great footage in these two videos. Wish there were some more like this. A Brazilian gal was here Sat. night and was telling me how funny the dialogue is, used by the narrator.

nice ...

indeed the dialog is a hoot... poetic at times, and other times just marketing type... good historical info from the pictures..
RCV was a big corporation... even had a daycare on site for the staff's children... a nice touch even by today's standards.

Portuguese sparkling wine, I had forgotten about that...
