Got back late last week from this all sweet wine affair down in Jerez de la Frontera! Awesome wines, and interesting people. You listen to some of my trip over at my site. Thought I'd post a few notes I took from the port world. Just an assortment of LBV's though I didn't really get a chance to try much else as port went. Too many things I hadn't ever tasted before!

Most interesting wine: Austrian White Syrah with 190gr of sugar...Incredible

Question that arose while down there that someone here might be able to answer: Is there a Port wine that is dessert style that is not fortified? Anyone know?

here are the LBV notes:
  • 1999 Poças Porto Late Bottled Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/2/2006)
Deep purple in color. The nose is a mix of smokey wood, allspice and hidden fruits. Strong acidity helps to cleanse the sweetness from becoming heavey on the palate where cherries, black raspberries, anise, and minerals all mingle. 3/5
  • 1999 Quinta de la Rosa Porto Late Bottled Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/2/2006)
Deep reddish in color. The nose is a mix of dusty minerals, anise, and dark cherries. Rich in the mouth a strong acidity that gives way to allow flavors of smoke, anise, like clove, chocolate, and black raspberry come out. 3/5
  • 2000 Ramos-Pinto Porto Late Bottled Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/2/2006)
Dark color with a nose that shows wood, dry spices, and currants. Very dry in the mouth with some red fruits, though I think this might be an off bottle. 2/5
  • 2000 Royal Oporto (Real Companhia Velha) Porto LBV - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/2/2006)
Deep in color the nose is alive and seems to jump out of the glass with grape, blackberry, and cherry notes. Rich and unctous with a high acidity and firm fine tannins. Black fruits, light clove and more are well layered on the palate. Nice wine! 4/5
