Mystery wine - is this a port or something else?

Post by Joe Dachille »

I'm usually hanging out in the madeira forum, but I might have a stumper here.

Quinta do conego
1987
"Estremadura"
Vermelha (producer)

Will upload a photo soon.

Estremadura is another wine region of Portugal and I think the largest by volume.

Here is a (poor) photo of the label. There is a red wax seal on the top of the bottle.

"Licoroso"? Is that "liquor/spirits", "licorice", or something else?

Is 1987 still drinkable? The merchant said it was ok to good, but the cork might disintegrate.

"licoroso" is a generic name for a fortified wine. This is a fortified red wine; it is not Port and it is not from the Douro. Estremadura is the old name for the "Lisboa" region.

I've had some of these back from the 1950's this past May when visiting the Lisbon area. All of the oldies were still great and I remember one 1957 was amazing, albeit a different producer, as the label was very unique. I'd say if your bottle was stored well, your odds are pretty good given it is only 24 years old.

I did as Moses suggested and popped the cork.
:winepour:

But since the wine was, as Daniel indicated, not a port, I will post my comments in the Portuguese table wine forum.

As per the label that wine was produced by Caves Vidigal, a wine producer located near the town of Leiria, in central Portugal.

Their website is: http://vidigalwines.com/

Estremadura Wine Region has been renamed in 2009 and it's now Lisboa Wine Region. :-)
