40 Year Old Tawny Port by Sandeman

Post by Frederick Blais »

Bottled in 2000, this tawny was bottled in a 6000 limited edition packaged in a very nice wood box. The bottle even has a nice red wax seal to prove the special edition along with a unique number for each of the bottles. Here is an interesting notes about the wine too :
Reblended in 2000, these tawnies were aged in smaller barrels that had previously been filled with table wine, then emptied and used for port.
I tasted this Port 2 years ago and I was not able to find any bottles, now in Ontario they released it for almost half the price I should have paid for it 2 years ago. I'm still very impressed.

Pale amber color with some green on the edge. Rich creamy nose of toffey and butter, burnt caramel, grilled nuts and some light spices all lift off by the nice orange zest background, clearly complex and powerful charming nose. On the palate, smooth rich on the entry with those toffey flavours, the wines just explose and keep on building layers of rich flavours of toffey, caramel, grilled nuts with a zesty spicy finish that just keep on going endlessy on the back of the tongue. I've never tasted a better 40 yr old tawny yet! 19/20 points

Fred,

Nice note! Are you able to post a small picture of the bottle and box? I would love to see it.

Thanks

Fred,

What is a realistic price for this wine? I have a local shop that sells it for US$126.

I paid mine 125$ canadian all taxes included. As specified earlier, that wine was selling for 220$ 2 years ago. At that price, 126$us I'd buy them considering it is cheaper for a 750ml bottle of 40 yr old tawny than many and I find this to be a really fine one!

Though connecticut is not that far from Ontario, Canada so if you plan to buy a few bottles, cross the borders!

I found a bottle near me for $125.00 (US) but it was the 1999 bottling. I didn't get it since it wasn't the 2000 bottling you wrote about. I will have to try one, if and when I find the 2000 bottling you had. If not, then a newer bottling. I figured a tawny in bottle for 7 years would not be the freshest.

Andy, my bad the one I had was bottled in 99. That is what happens when you copy paste stuff from other websites. Just to confirm it is the right blend, look on the bottle for the 2 words "limited edition" under tawny porto and also you should get a serial numer with a seal on its right saying 1790/2000. If you have all that it is the right one.

Fred, which shop did you go to in Ontario? I'd like to have my sister keep an eye out, but I can't locate it on the LCBO website.

4 times a year the LCBO release a speciality catalog called "THe classics". You can view the item at this web page :

http://www.vintages.com/classics/1/fort ... html#Port0

If you want to have a chance to get a bottle, normally you have to send an order before a defined date to get into the lottery if the demand is more than what they offer. When the product is not sold out it is normally distributed among LCBO branch. I don't know why this product is not in the inventory yet, give a call to the classics LCBO department, maybe the bottles are still all in their wharehouse.

I make all my deliveries for the products I need to the Cornwall branch, I have familly near that picks it for me.

Let me know if you need more details about LCBO.
