Word just in that John Avery passed away last Friday.
May he rest in peace and sincere condolences to his family!

In what capacity was John Avery involved with madeira? Sorry for being unfamiliar with him. Assuming he was a winemaker there, this is indeed sad news.

Sad news. Avery's is/was one of the leading Madeira retailers in the UK. Had their 1846 Avery's label Terrantez recently which was superb.
