TN: Fernandes More then 40 Year Old Verdelho

Post by Eric Ifune »

The 48 year in cask bottling. I opened this to get ready for the upcoming Fortification Tour.
Quite dark for (only!) 48 years in cask. Dark, amber with an olive oil rim. Popped and poured. Aromas developed in the glass. Rich toasted nuts, butter toffee, grapefruit, and orange marmalade aromas. Medium on the palate. Rich, perfect balance of sweetness, dryness (I know this sounds like a contradiction but the richness gives a sweet aspect while the wine itself is just dry) for Verdelho. My favorite style. Great depth. Perhaps not quite the complexity of something like the D'Oliveria 1905, but I'd put it in the same quality class. Bracing acidity on the long, rich finish with more roasted nuts and dried fruits. Will see how it develops over the next few days. I love this stuff and hope there's more to be had in June.
