Very cool. IIRC there are still a couple of the old steam trains sitting in the Regua rail yard. All I can say is that had to be one slow journey from Oporto up into the heart of the Douro Valley.

In Zev's film, Francisco Olazabal talks about this very topic and the length of time it took for a train to go all the way up to Pocinho (last stop in Portugal) from Porto. Things have really progressed since the 19th century.

Re: Trains in the Douro (Video)
I remember Paul Symington recalling a story about how the train arrived early at Vesuvio one day. Someone yelled across the river on a megaphone from Qta d. S. d. Riberia to the train telling them they were early and to wait for their guests to get across the river in a boat. The reply from the train was something like, "Were not early, were late. We are the train from yesterday!" Apparently the train was delayed for some reason and was almost a full 24 hours late!Roy Hersh wrote:In Zev's film, Francisco Olazabal talks about this very topic and the length of time it took for a train to go all the way up to Pocinho (last stop in Portugal) from Porto. It was a nice change of pace taking the train from Porto to Regua for the first time in several years.
