This bottle (Power's 1848 Bual) is up for auction in less than two weeks time. Estimated price range EUR 200-300.
Haven't got a clue what to expect from this as I''ve never had Madeira pre-1950. Worthy of bidding? Or a risk?

Have not had this particular wine, but Powers (full name Power Drury & Co.)is an old company who joined the Madeira Wine Association early in the twenthieth century. Assuming this wine was made before joining and was thus, kept under the Powers name. Do you know when it was bottled? 200 euros sounds like an excellent price for a pre-phylloxera Bual in good condition.

No, still waiting for the auction pictures to become available to see if there is a bottling date on the label. As for it's condition, the catalog lists the bottle as having a level 5cm below cork and a stained and torn label. This points to it not being a recent bottling.Eric Ifune wrote:Have not had this particular wine, but Powers (full name Power Drury & Co.)is an old company who joined the Madeira Wine Association early in the twenthieth century. But indeed, you're right, this is from the pre-phylloxera age.
Thanks! Roel.

Didn't get it unfortunately. Had a bid on it at EUR 260 but got outbid.
Ah well, better luck next time.
