Colares

Post by Brian C. »

I ran across this blog entry about the long forgotten appellation of Colares: http://cellarbook.wordpress.com/2012/04 ... -the-sand/

Has anybody actually tried a wine from Colares before?

Pre-question: Who has actually heard of Colares and knows where it is?

Colares is very close to Lisbon, near Sintra, a classic wine region (along with Bucelas and Carcavelos, for example) that now has only a few hectares and a handful of producers. Urban expansion has been the main cause of the destruction of the region. Vines are mostly ungrafted planted on sandy terrain, with varieties such as Ramisco and Malvasia. Some wines age very well and are very cheap. It is easy to buy in Portugal bottles with 30, 40, 50 years of age for under 20 Euros; most are just OK but you will find some gems.
