That's correct, Eric. All Port, not just vintage, must be bottled in Portugal.

So although it is possible to purchase a full pipe, the producer would have to have it bottled for you and labeled, then shipped. Sorry if I was not clear.

Okay, just had to check. Although it would be awesome to have the pipe itself.... 8--) My wife would probably make me saw it ihalf to make a giganto planter.... :roll: :roll:

OK. So I might be a bit slow to answer, but I have just voted.

Probably, most of the purchases I make are in 6 packs. For a major shipper in a major vintage, I might buy a couple of 6-packs, but that's what I buy for new releases.

For a lot of mature wine being bought on release (like the 1985 Fonseca released last year) I also often buy in 6-packs.

Rarities and expensive stuff (like the recently released 1963 Dow in magnum) I buy twos where I can afford to and singles (or maybe 2 singles spread over a couple of months) where I can't.

I normally buy port in quantities of half a case. Sometimes I buy one half case and sometimes I buy more than one half case. I also buy lots of single bottles, twos, threes, etc depending on what is on offer.

May I ask what a mag of 1963 Dow (ex-cellars) was selling for? That would be a GREAT find. Congrats my friend!

We are given most of our Port, whether vintage, LBV, or even unlabelled... we live in the middle of the Port producing region. I love Port, but I can't drink the rivers of it that are given to us!

So I rarely buy Port, except as gifts when travelling, because flying restrictions mean I can't take it on the plane!

Berry's had a small stock of them a couple of months back. I recall that they were ridiculously expensive, but I'm a sucker for '63 port...

As far as I know, it is still possible to buy port in bulk. However, you won't be able to bottle it and sell it as port later on. We have a local wine retailer here that has a few barrels in his shop. They fill up your own bottle (or provide one) and sell it as "ruby" and "tawny", without the mention of port.

That is slick. I wonder if I can get SFE to sell me a barrel of that Quinta do Vesuvio blended and fortified stuff from a recent vintage. I wouldn't call it Port, but I would enjoy it.
