Do anyone know which house Glibey's bottled between 1890-and 1900? They opened up in London 1852 and I have a note that they have some connection with Smith Woodhouse at that time and Croft was acquired in 1911. Have just drank their 1896 and I have their 1900 in my cellar.
Kind Regards

How was the 1896?

From memory - and I haven't checked my books - Gilbey's shipped their own port. They purchased port made by the farmers in the Douro, blended it to their requirements, shipped to the UK and bottled there. I don't know who they bought from or what their connection was to either Smith Woodhouse or Croft. Something in the back of my mind whispers that the brand is now owned by Sogrape.

Hi Roy!
It was quite old and a bit tired. My problem is that I have had the 1896 and I have 1900 in my cellar. I have been able to buy 1890 but it was too expensive. On no of these bottles there have been a label Just the metal over the cork are saying Gilbey and the year of the vintage. Have you seen any label of Gilbey? All newer vintage I think I know the house i.e. 1920 it was Dow and later on 1955, 1960 and 1963 Croft and 1970 Martinez
Kind Regards
