Souza Guedes ancient port.

I own a bottle of ancient Souza Guedes port, but until now I have not been able to find any information about it.



Anyone here in the forum knows anything about it?

According to google, Souza Guedes owned (amongst other vineyards) Quinta do Seixo (sold to Ferreira in 1979) and Carvahlas and itself became part of the Real Companhia Velha in the sixties.

Don't have any particular feeling for what type of port you have there though - the numbers don't particularly look like to me like they are part of a specific vintage date but could be a lote number for some old tawny style port...?

Thank you for your answer. It doesn't seems neither vintage nor colheita. Well, it is undoubtelly old and that's almost all I know!

It appears there is a small piece of the Selo sticking out from under the wax capsule. If so, that would narrow it down to the 1940's and later. Given it's very dark glass would most likely indicate post World War 2. Also would indicate it was bottled in Vila Nova d. Gaia. I don't see any obvious mold marks (but hard to see in pic) and if not I would put it mid to late 50's or later.

Can you give some background information as to when you got it, where it came from, etc. Any other background info you may have could help us in narrowing things down a bit more.

It's hard to tell if it is a small piece of the selo. The bottle was in my godfather's estate that's all I know about its provenience. In the back it has a small and narrow label with advices regarding Port wine. It is almost illegible.

My guess is it is a colheita and 150 is the anniversary of the brand.

The founder of this house was Miguel de Souza Guedes in 1851. The name was later Souza Guedes & Irmao and is known since 1909. Miguel de Souza Guedes bought Quinta de Seixo during the 1870s and sold the quinta to Ferreira in 1979. He also bought Quinta das Carvalhas in 1880 and it was not until then that quinta start produce Port Wine. This quinta has produced Single Vintage Quinta Port. He included other neighbouring quintas such as Quinta das Baratas in 1886, Quinta das Covades, Quinta do Zeferino in 1899, Quinta das Monteiras in 1926 and Quinta das Galgas, Quinta da Cascakheira, Quinta da Plombeira and lastly Quinta da Cruz. In 1965 this port house was bought by Silva Reis and became a part of Real Companhia Velha and Quinta das Carvalhas was included in the deal. Today you often find it as just Guedes. For me known vintage: 1890, 1908, 1927, 1942, 1955, 1958. I have found Guedes from1935, 1977, 1983

Joao, I think I have solved the mystery.

I have examined the picture very carefully. I have also read all of the comments posted by others here. Having considered all of the options I am convinced that I know what this is.

It is, without doubt, an old bottle of Port of unknown origin, provenance and style that should be opened and enjoyed

I contacted Garrafeira Nacional and Garrafeira do Tio Pepe here in Portugal. Nobody knew nothing about the bottle.
