What has been the greatest Port find this board has introduced you to?

Post by Andy Velebil »

Most of us have had quite a bit of Port over our lives. And while many of us have been lucky to have met in person some fantastic people and producers as a result of the board, we've all also been introduced to new Ports and Douro wines as a result of this board. That may have been previously untried vintages or types from a producer you've had before or an entirely new producer altogether.

So what has been your greatest find as a result of this board? Keep in mind "Greatest" doesn't necessarily mean the greatest you've ever tasted, though it may. It could also be your greatest or favorite daily drinker or QPR.

I can easily think of Quevedo. Before coming on the trip with Roy, I had never heard nor tasted his wines/Port and it has been a great discovery for me. The 1975 Oscar did open for us was really good! Unfortunately the wines are not available in Quebec.

Quevedo for sure. Portal, although sold locally to some degree is a brand I may not tried on my own. The Harvest tour opened my eyes to several other brands that I really like Gaivosa, Andreson, & Dona Matilde.

The biggest benefit from the board is the fellow port enthusiasts from all over that I have had the pleasure to drink port with and share good times.

Without a doubt, Ferreira 20 year tawny. It's now my "house" port, as well as the favorite tipple of the Gang of Port. It has the lovely characteristic of improving a bit over the first three or four days after opening, and staying on a plateau for several weeks (on the rare occasions when such durability is needed) and finally declining gracefully (never bad, just a bit less interesting) over the next several weeks.

Hello!

Do you think Quevedo is worth a try? I came across their blog the other day but I tought it was a second league Port.

Oscar Quevedo and his family make some very good Ports and Douro wines. Oscar is also a great guy who is active here on this Board and has become friends with many here as well. I know you'll get plenty of good recommendations to try Quevedo products, me being one of them. Please, do try Quevedo [cheers.gif]

That's easy: Roy. Had I not stumbled upon FTLOP I'd have never known that we live 3 miles apart. [friends.gif] [cheers.gif]

As for actual Port, just about every Port I've ever had can be traced back in some way to FTLOP. So any great Port could be counted. The lone exception is Porto Rocha's 20-yr old Tawny, a bottle of which was given to me for my 40th birthday and which sparked my interest in Port. That Port led to me finding FTLOP, and it was all downhill from there.

I'm with Glenn. The greatest Port find that this board has introduced me to is the wider circle of Port loving friends whose company I now enjoy - far too frequently judging by the number of tasting notes I've written this year!

There is no specific wine that I can really point to. I have shared some amazing Ports and Port occasions. Doing one of Roy's Harvest Tours, a casual tasting at a London restaurant where we had 4 pre WW1 Ports including two 1896 Ports, a Croft vertical in Boston back to the 19th century, this year's 1912 horizontal, a Noval vs Nacional tasting going back to the legendary 1931, a colheita tasting going back to two 1815 Ports (Royal Oporto and Ferreira) and many, many more such crazy tastings. What stands out across all of these amazing occasions was not just the wines, but also the people who were there to make the times so special and memorable.

My greatest Port find - that there are others just as much in love with Port as I am. What a find!

+1

I met Alex, Christopher, Roy, Mario, Tom and a few others for the first time at the very first FTLOP port tasting in London in 2005. I have met many others since at tastings and on visits to Portugal. All of those people, and all of the Port we have shared, have been my "greatest Port find on this board" [cheers.gif]

Prior to joining this board, I had communicated with Roy by email and he had recommended the 1991 Croft to me.
