1990 Dow Vintage Port Quinta do Bomfim

Bought upon release. Medium reddish-brown, somewhat like a tawny. Double decanted 12 hours prior, but still hot with alcohol. Very forward and advanced. The wine didn't have the typical Dow dry finish. Fully mature and perhaps declining a tad. I wouldn't hold this for any appreciable length of time. (88 pts.)

John,
Thanks for the update on this one. The tasting notes in the DB on this Port do seem to cover the spectrum, with being more advanced a reoccurring theme.

Hi Andy,

I noticed that too. That's why I try to note the provenance for wines if I have it. In this case, the wine was bought on release and stored undisturbed in a 55 degree/70% humidity cellar from that point forward. It could be possible that we gave it too much of a decant time, but I wouldn't have thought so. As it turns out, I forgot that I have one unused bottle from that night that's been in the fridge. I'll break that out tonight and try it to see what has happened and report back within this thread.

On Day 4 I tried a separate bottle that had been made ready for the dinner event but not used. It was kept in the fridge for the four days. This bottle was better than the first. The alcohol heat is very much tamed with only a prickle on the tongue. Raisins, tart cherries and plums with some chocolate notes. I'm not changing my score but it's nice to know it holds together well for a few days.

Bought on release and stored in excellent cellar condition. Double decanted five hours before service.

Light red color. The palate shows lot of dates and red raspberries. There's still a touch of alcohol heat showing, but not much.

Past full maturity and beginning to decline, but not failing. Still has a few years of good drinking life left. It's a good wine for accompanying a medium chocolate dessert. (88 pts.)
