Small producers to visit for Madeira trip?

Post by Aaron A »

Hello,

I'm looking for some small family owned, traditional, biodynamic, or organic Madeira producers to visit on my trip to the Island. I am a wine student from NYC and have traveled for wine education in the past but really enjoy connecting with the craftsman behind the wines. Any tips or introductions are appreciated!

Regards,
-Aaron

Two of my favorites are Borges and Barros e Souza. Neither is imported to the States.
Both are family owned, Borges by several sisters and Barros e Souza by a pair of brothers. Barros e Souza in particular is a throwback in time. They are the smallest shipper on the Island and nothing in their office post dates World War II. They are next door to D'Oliveiras. If no one is in when you visit, just walk in and wait a bit. They may be down the street on their coffee break! One interesting thing about them, is they are so small, they can vinify tiny lots. As small as a couple hundred liters and so sometimes have interesting things like Porto Santo or Listrao.

ABSL is a fantastic place to visit. I agree with Eric; it's like going back in time.
