FTLOP 8th Anniversary Tasting, 8-10-2013

Post by Glenn E. »

It's that time again - FTLOP is another year older and we have more Port to drink! [yahoo.gif]

This year the tasting will be a couple of weeks later than usual due to scheduling conflicts. Saturday, August 10th instead of the last weekend in July. We're also going to do 2 sessions like we did for the 1983 retrospective, so plan for the entire afternoon starting at Noon and ending whenever we finish up around 11:00 pm or Midnight. (With a break for dinner around 5:00, of course.) The location is TBD, but I'm going to try to get the Issaquah Holiday Inn as usual.

The theme is simply "bring something great to share" and as a guideline that means 1970 or older for VP, or 1960 or older for Colheita. Please email me or Roy about the bottle you plan to bring so that we can ensure there's no duplication. We'll also try to keep things balanced in terms of VP/Colheita and also "epic-ness" of selection.

We also ask that anyone coming from out of town please ship your bottle to one of us at least 2-3 weeks in advance. That will give your bottle the best possible chance to avoid suffering from travel sickness.

Stewart, Andy, and David - your spots are reserved, but if you can't make it this year let me know and I'll free up your spot for someone else.
(Stewart will be out of town. :( )
(Andy can't make it :( )
(David can't make it :( )

We're looking forward to another great celebration!

We'd love to see everyone, but we won't be making the trip up this year - at least in part because we just allocated all of our 2013 port budget to buying bottles of 2011 VP.

Maybe next year!

Possibly not. Those crazy Canadians are making up their mind whether or not they are going to be able to make it down here. It doesn't help that my wife has half of Michigan staying with us that weekend. [dash1.gif] So there may yet be one or two more places if anyone is still looking forward to join us, please keep an eye open to this thread in the next 48 hours.

Flights are booked, and my wine should be in Glenn's possession later today! [dance2.gif]

I might have to open one of the bottles in the shipment just to, you know, make sure they were damaged by FedEx or anything. Clearly the Colheita would be the best one to open for that purpose!

As usual, the lineup is looking pretty awesome. I don't have picks from everyone yet, but the ones that I do have will make this tasting worth the trip!

Any chance of a sneak preview of some of what's confirmed? Or is it usually a surprise?

It's usually a surprise, though that isn't a formal tradition. That's just the way it typically works out.

So far the youngest bottle is from 1963 and we have a good balance of VP and Colheita. We also have more than one 100-yr old bottle!
