It could be kosher...
Have a look at this link:

Note the fresh modern label, foiled capsule and recent looking IVDP seal.
Have Ramos Pinto dug out a stash of old bottles and tarted them up for sale?

Am I alone in feeling that I would have much more confidence in this bottle if it was caked in grime, had a barely legible slip label, and a cork that showed the visible degradations of seven decades?
In the same vein, I am slightly twitchy about Ferreira's ancient bottles - aside from being relatively numerous, and always sporting modern labels, they never seem to have poor fill levels...

Yeah I agree, The IVDP seal, label, and foil are all newer styles.
Does anyone (Roy?) have a contact with them to see if these are recently released ex-cellar bottles and find out the story behind these.

Just wanted to let you know that I did not yet have an answer. 95% of People of the wine trade in Europe are on vacation right now, hopefuly I should get an answer before September.
Edit: Weird.... I logged with the same information as usual and it seems to have created another user... well my old one.

Here is the answer.
This bottle looks authentic, according to the IDVP seel, the bottle was labeled on the 29th of September 1986. From this it is now important to know how was the bottle stored for the last 20 years.
Hope this helps

Fred,
Thanks for getting the info.
So if it was labeled in 1986, i assume it is a cohleita? And I assume it was also bottled in 1986.
(BTW, Fred, glad to see your using your correct log-in profile now
)

No Andy, it is not a Colheita, it was labeled in 1986. It means that they removed it from they lodges to release it on the market. As you'll notice in your upcoming trip with Roy, the bottles stored in the cellar do not have any labels or IDVP seel. They put it only when they release it on the market. This is why you often see the same product with different labels over the time.

thanks Fred, That makes perfect sense.
Just when i thought I was getting a handle on all these regulations :? So, Theoretically, even though the seal did not come about until the 1933 regulations I guess you could get a pre-1900 bottle of VP, that if held in celler, and released in 2006, it would have a current IVDP seal and a new label?

I don't know how he did that, he is sales director of Ramos Pinto, maybe he is access to a listing that Ramos Pinto is keeping up to date.uncle tom wrote:Fred, thanks for your digging - do you know how your friend deciphered that IVDP number?

PS - Out of curiosity, what do those Niepoort Garrafeira bon-bons hold?
T
For the Niepoort Garrafeira, it is from the 1986 harvest. Was it what you wanted to know?

I could be wrong, but thought Tom might be refering to the 11 liters or so that the demijohns hold.

The IVDP has always been able to provide the information by Seal of Guarantee number ... to a producer. They just don't release the same information to a consumer or journalist.
