Madeirawine in San Fransisco ???? Where to find ??

Hello out there!

Next month we will go straight from Norway via AMS and ORD to Vegas. Then on to San Fransisco.

I know San Fransisco very well (my 12th time there :) ). But I have no idea where to buy madeirawine there. Downtown, of course.

I just looking for 5-10 year old’s etc. (For having a drink in the hotel room), NOT vintage. Like Broadbent 10 year Malmsey which I would like to try.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hi Reidar,
What dates will you be in Las Vegas? Broadbent is based in San Francisco so their wines are well represented there. You might try K&L Wine Merchants or the Wine Club. I'm sure there are other places I'm missing. They both have web sites.

I used to live in San Francisco, too bad we never met up.

In addition to K&L Wines and The Wine Club, which are both about a 20 min walk from downtown, you might also try John Walker and Co. They are in the heart of downtown on Sutter St, although as I recall, their prices were not the best.

If you walk down to K&L and The Wine Club, avoid going down 6th Street... a bit seedy.

I have started my research and K&L is just down from our hotel at Sutter.

My wife stay at Macy and around Union and I go winehunting !!

K&L is a good store, as is the wine club which is only about 7 blocks away. Both have a fair selection of VP (well, more than most stores anyways), unfortunately I cannot recall what their Maderia selection is like.

If you have a car you could go to Beltramos in Menlo Park (there is another K&L there as well), which I know has a selection of Maderia including the Broadbent 10 year.

But by far the easiest would be to order from Broadbent with delivery to your hotel (i.e. order before you leave for the US). You could do the same from K&L, or from the Rare Wine Co. which is a hop skip and a jump away in Sonoma.

Resturants with good selections of VP and Maderia would be Fleur de Lis (Expensive, get reservation now if you want to go, to my mind this is the best resturant in the entire Bay Area), and for cheaper you could try Postrio (not nearly as nice but less expensive although still pricey).

It looks like a great restaurant, but the markup that some restaurants put on wine never ceases to amaze me. They charge $22 for a glass of Ramos-Pinto LBV. By contrast, I normally buy this for $14 per bottle.

No, it is not a cheap resturant, neither the wine nor the food. Rather it is an all night experience, plan on spending 3-4 hours and 5-7 courses with wine pairings (probably the best way to get your bang for your buck in wine there).

Normal people cannot go there very often, due to the expense. But when on vacation, its a good excuse to go overboard!
