TN: Welsh Brothers 1934 Verdelho

Post by Eric Ifune »

A name one doesn't hear much, even though they were original members of the Maderia Wine Association. I've only had one prior to this which was OK. According to Liddel's book, the MWC used the brand to ship to Japan, but this particular bottle has a US importer's label (New York).
Beautiful, glowing copper-green color.
Rich, meaty aromas with lots of toasted nuts and toffee.
On the palate, intense flavors of limes and caramel. Good depth and concentration. A rich style, but high acidity keeps it all in check. Great balance. Long, rich, finish with orange peel and toffee. Lip smacking acidity.
This is terrific stuff, on par with the D'Oliveiras 1912 and the Barbeito 1929. 94 points.

Sounds fabulous as you have equated it to two bottlings that I lust. I have not seen any Welsh Bros. bottlings this young. Where did you find it?

I've had this for some time and so don't really remember where I got it. Unfortunately, it was my only bottle. I wanted a Verdelho for the hot weather so decided on this one. It was much better than I expected! I'm assuming it's from a lot the MWC bottled under different labels but haven't seen other Verdelhos from this year. I'm going by memory, but it resembles the 29 Barbeito the most. Might be worthwhile looking for other MWC labels from this vintage.
