1994 Krohn Colheita Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

bottled in 2006

I double decanted this and drank it over the course of about 6 hours.

A nice nose of menthol with slight hints of carmel and a bit of heat to round it out. The first thing that hits is a big dose of thick spice followed by a silky smooth mid-palate that seems to melt in your mouth. The finish really makes a dramatic change and becomes a bit hot and harsh, but just for a few seconds, then leaves a huge cinnamon, with a touch of nuts, on the long finish.

What started out a bit disjointed and simple, really evolved over the time period that I drank it. It became much more integrated with layered flavors. A nice treat...
88 points.

Thank you Andy, I grab a bottle 2 weeks ago with the intention of letting it age a few years in the bottle.

Do you often double decant a Colheita? And why if there is personnal preference to do so?

Fred,

I double decanted only because it seemed very tight when I first opened it and sipped it. I wanted to give it a good dose of air to settle down. It was getting better every hour. But the first few hours it was very young, tight, and hot. I don't have a lot of experience with colheita's, but I believe this one needs at least 2-3 more years in the cellar to mellow out. and integrate better. It does have the meat there to age and I feel it will increase a couple of points with time.

This one is actually available at the BevMo near me, and I tried it about 6 months ago. I thought it was not well integrated, and very "hot".

But I think I drank it with freinds immediatly after opening, and did not decant or even let it sit open in the bottle....I may try another after your note above, and give it some time.

At ~$20/bottle (at least thats my recollection), if it gets better with a days decanting I'll stock up. I'll report back with me new tasting.

Jay,

I agree that this was very hot when I first sipped it. (turth be told, i wasn't real keen on it at first sip). I saved 2 glasses for today, just to see how it was on day two.

Interesting, the nose took on more of a medicinal quality. The heat is, compared to last night, almost gone. There is a nice bit of plum and a touch of carmel, then a spicy finish that last for a long time.

Compared to last night, where the finish hit like a scotch going down for a few seconds, today that is not so. I suggest giving this at least 12-16 hours in the decanter for it to show its best. It is much better on day 2.

BTW, Krohn's 2001 Traditional LBV is very very tasty, and at only $13-14 (US) a steal. I already bought 1/2 a case of them and will probably get more next week. I recommend it for a good LBV to drink now and to hold for several more years.

Andy

I'll look for that one and give it a try. For Krohn's I have only tasted the 94 Colheita, and the 91 VP. I have not heard a lot of great things about Krohn's VPs, but a store near me had half bottles for pretty cheap and I gave it a go. I was very pleasently surprised and went back and got some more. But I'll have to save a more thorough description for next months virtual tasting as I think that may be the only 91 I have around.
