I assume you received your newsletter and wondered if you liked having the suggestion about "born on dating" on Port bottles ... included?

Mario still complains that there are not enough pictures in the FTLOP enewsletter.

If this works then I think next months newsletter with lead with an open letter to the shippers requesting free cask samples for life for all FTLOP members that attend one of your trips to the Douro 8)

I am surprised you did not ask for something like a case of VP upon release of each new generally declared vintage, for life. Now that would be more worthy.

Roy, that would just be greed - I think a free 75cl cask sample from each of 250 shippers each year would be quite sufficient

I very much liked the op-ed piece. If there is any effect, we will all be better off as consumers, and the shippers will be better off as well. It's a win win, if it can get past the inertia of tradition.

I'm still scratching my head over this - the date of bottling is usually on the label or can otherwise be determined by the rules dictated by the IVDP.

This issue is not bottling date but release date.

Are you sure you meant to say this Roy??

Are you restricting your thoughts to dated wines? (i.e. VP, LBV & Colhieta)

I don't think this is what Roy is getting at. I think he (we?) is asking the shippers to put a date on every bottle so that we would know if a ruby, tawny, reserve or lbv had sat on the shelf too long. A secondary consequence would be that we would knw when ex-cellars VP was released.

My impression is that these products tend to improve slightly for a few years after bottling, and then take a very long time to show significant deterioration (by which time, hardly any remain) - It would not hurt to have the bottling date included, but I don't recall anyone on this site worrying about this.

This is the important bit we've discussed.

However, as all VP has to be bottled within a couple of years after vintage - whether it's released or not - it's the release date, not the bottling date, that's of interest.
